]]> A fire in Seattle has severed the power supply to a group of servers, which included Microsoft's Bing Travel section, according to a report by Tech Flash. Not only was that part of Bing knocked out, but also Authorize.net and various other sites, as a transformer was blown at the Fisher Plaza data center, where the servers were running. ]]> With Firefox 3.5 being recently released, and hitting five million downloads in 24 hours, Firefox appears to be gaining more market share, and Internet Explorer's market share is slipping according to Favbrowser, and a graph by statcounter shown below. Internet Explorer fell from 62.09% to 59.49%, while Firefox rose from 28.75% to 30.33%. But Firefox isn't the only browser that's gaining market share. Opera, recently released the beta version of version 10 of its browser, rose from 3.23% to 3.36%, Safari, recently released version 4 of its browser and hitting 11 million downloads in three days, rose from 3.23% to 3.36%, and Chrome rose from 2.42% to 2.82%.

The application allows users to upload pictures of themselves and have them rated by other iPhone users in a rating system similar to hotornot.com. ]]> The Guardian is reporting that O2 have won an exclusivity deal for the Palm Pre in the UK. The Pre which is already on sale in the US is a rival to Apple's iPhone. ]]> Microsoft's newest search engine, Bing, has gained a little more traction in the fight against Google's web search dominance. Bing took an 8.23% cut of US web searches for the month of June which is up from Microsoft's previous search engine which served only 7.81% percent of searches for May. Microsoft is refusing to let Google win the online search wars and is promoting Bing with online and television advertisements. Microsoft is still investing heavily and the latest rumor is that it still considers partnering with Yahoo as a viable option to gain a stronger foothold in the search engine market.

]]> The results are in from benchmarks of Firefox 3.5, performed by ZDNet. The benchmarks test all the main browsers from Google Chrome 2.0.172.33, Safari 4, Firefox 3.5, Firefox 3.0.5, Opera 10 Alpha and Internet Explorer 8. Each browser was put through three tests including SunSpider javascript benchmark, V8 Benchmark Suite and finally the ACID 3 test. Firefox 3.5 was built for speed and performance, compared to previous versions of Firefox. Firefox 3.5 performed better than Firefox 3.0.5 and Internet Explorer 8 in all three categories. From the graphs, it is clear to see that Google Chrome performed the best overall, followed shortly by Safari 4 and then Firefox 3.5.

]]> After reporting that Microsoft will be charging up to twice as much for the full version of Windows 7E in Europe compared to Windows 7 in the United States, Microsoft has responded by adjusting their pricing. Consumers can purchase an upgrade for as little as $199 in the U.S. while Europe will pay ?309 or $433.99 (US) for the full version. Microsoft states the reason for the missing upgrade for Windows 7, that allows you to upgrade a valid Windows licensed copy of Vista for example to Windows 7 is that Vista came with Internet Explorer 8 pre-installed, while Windows 7E will not.

]]> Apple has released a beta build 7C97d of iPhone OS 3.1 to its developers today. Although there is no official change log yet (as this is a first beta) we have installed the update on a 3G and 3GS here in the Neowin office and it's noticeably faster moving around the OS. We are still tinkering around trying to find further changes but rumour has it this update is getting pumped out to address some battery issues that users have been complaining about over at the Apple iPhone discussion forums. Early indications show that the tethering hack we detailed earlier this month does work correctly. We will update the list below with our findings. What's new?

According to Ars Technica, Microsoft has opened up the SDK to three different levels of Partners, each with bigger benefits than the tier below it. To get access to it, you'll have to join what Microsoft is calling the Surface QuickStart Program, which has the three aforementioned tiers; the lowest are called Microsoft Surface Community Members, a step above that are called the Surface Partners and the highest level are Strategic Partners. This time, it's build 7264, which carries the build string of 6.1.7264.0.win7_rtm.090622-1900 meaning that it was complied last week. ]]> Mozilla has officially released Firefox 3.5 today as predicted earlier this week. Firefox 3.5 is the first major revision since 3.0 was released about a year ago. The new version sports a faster rendering engine, stability enhancements and a new javascript engine. It will also include support for the most widely-used elements of HTML 5 that allows for offline data access, enhanced web graphics and multimedia playback without plug-ins. The Firefox logo has also had a small revision as well. Mozilla has been showing different 3.5 features within a 35 day period, and has also shown the new tools developers can take advantage of in the new version.

]]> Updated: When NASA put a man on the moon it was a triumph of achievement for the US as it showed its technical capabilities and its dedication to space exploration. NASA spent years planning for and developing specialized equipment for the mission. One such piece of equipment was a high resolution video camera that would send back images to Earth. Because of the lack of technology at the time the video feed from the moon actually had to be compressed and scaled down to work on televisions across the world. After the initial recording of the high resolution stream from the moon the film went missing after its shipment back to the US.

]]> Swedish software company Global Gaming Factory X AB said on Tuesday it had agreed to buy file-sharing website The Pirate Bay for 60 million Swedish crowns ($7.7 million). The Pirate Bay is one of the 100 most visited websites in the world and hosts torrent files for a magnitude of illegal content. The 4 owners named as Frederik Neij, Gottfrid Svartholm Warg, Carl Lundstrom and Peter Sunde were sentenced to 1 year in prison earlier this year for “aiding in copyright infringement” coupled with a fine of 30 million Swedish kronor (£2.4 million/$3.6 million).

]]> Microsoft's upcoming Windows operating system, Windows 7, is slated for an October 22 release; however, the Redmond software giant allowed people to begin pre-ordering much earlier to beat the rush… and it seems this offer was quite well received in Japan. According to Engadget, Windows 7 has completely sold out of pre-orderable copies in Japan, which combines sales from the 17 retailers involved with the early orders. Apparently, this is a grand total of about 30,000 copies of the operating system, and it took 1.5 days (out of the 10 that were allocated) for this event to happen.

]]> True to their word, Apple have had CEO Steve Jobs return back to work, at the end of June. Jobs had been seen around the campus last week, but it seems he wasn't officially working then; only now, according to CNN, is he properly working again. A spokesman for Apple, Steve Dowling, said, “Steve Jobs is back to work. He is at Apple a few days a week and working from home the other days. We're glad to have him back,” and wouldn't comment any further. Steve Jobs had left Apple in January due to health concerns, and it seems that two months ago he may even have had a liver transplant.

]]> Research firm Gartner have published their predictions for PC sales for 2009, predicting that worldwide sales will fall by 6% from 2008 levels. The sales of netbooks, however, are set to rise. Gartner forecast that 274 million computers will be sold this year, down from 292 million units last year. This is actually higher than the 257 million units they predicted earlier this year due to growth that is expected in the fourth quarter of 2009. This growth is set to then set continue into 2010 with a growth of 10.3% currently projected. 21 million netbooks are expected to have been shipped this year and 30 million are predicted for next year.

]]> According to Computer World, things are not looking good for European fans of Windows 7 and Internet Explorer. Microsoft has decided to remove Internet Explorer from versions of Windows 7 to be sold in Europe, the company is not offering an upgrade path from Vista. Also, although international exchange rates vary, the prices of Windows 7 do not look good for people paying in euros or pounds. In an effort to quell EU concerns over anti-trust issues, Microsoft pre-emptively removed Internet Explorer from Windows 7. Many have speculated as to why the company made this move.

Long Zheng spotted them on Microsoft's Windows 7 site as the company ramps up it's marketing of Windows 7. In all of the videos, Latika Kirtane, product manager for Internet Explorer, stars once again. According to Zheng, Kirtane was the star of Microsoft's infamous Songsmith marketing video. ]]> Sony Corp. of Japan and Sweden's Ericsson have a long established joint venture in the Sony Ericsson line of cell phones. According to Yahoo's Tech News, it was reported in Saturday's Nikkei business daily that Sony would like to bring enhanced portable gaming features to the Sony Ericsson label to compete directly with Apple's iPhone and iPod Touch product lines. More and more game developers, like Capcom, are designing games for Apple's popular iPhone device and this is seen as a direct threat to some of Sony's portable gaming products. Sony is not commenting on the story but others have speculated that we may see a PlayStation Portable-like device that can make and receive cellphone calls.

]]> A large conglomerate of mega corps has backed the European Commission to support a standard of micro-USB connection for charging. The biggest surprise here is that Apple is joining in the support which means that they too will also adopt micro-USB for charging in their wireless devices. For any other company this wouldn't mean much but because Apple has used the same port design since its iPod inception this could have a wide scale affect on its consumers. Imagine that you bought an iPhone, a Bose radio with an iPod dock connector, your car has built in support for the connection and Apple changes its port design and all of your devices become incompatible with future products.

]]> Roughly a year ago we reviewed the Asus Crosshair II Formula, based on the Nvidia nForce 780a SLI chipset. This board provided those who were brave enough to pick up a Phenom processor with a stable platform that sported a number of impressive features such as Triple-SLI. At the time we said the Crosshair II Formula was a well designed motherboard that was let down by a power hungry chipset and sub-par processors. But AMD managed to turn things around when they released the Phenom II X4 with models clocked at 2.8GHz and 3.0GHz.
